  5.     Brotherly love can make a man do strange things. On the
  6. night of Oct. 23, 1989, Matthew Stuart pulled his car alongside
  7. a blue Toyota parked in a predominantly black Boston
  8. neighborhood. The driver of the Toyota, Matthew's brother
  9. Charles, handed him a purse through the window. Accompanied by
  10. his friend John McMahon, Matthew ditched the purse in the Pines
  11. River. It contained the engagement ring of Carol Stuart -- as
  12. well as the .38 revolver that Charles had just used to kill his
  13. pregnant wife and then wound himself.

  15.     The murder transfixed the nation and aggravated Boston's
  16. racial tensions after Charles Stuart, posing as a mugging
  17. victim, called police from his car phone and sent them on a
  18. manhunt that led to the arrest of a black suspect. Ten weeks
  19. later, Matthew came forward and told authorities he had helped
  20. dispose of the purse. Next day, Charles committed suicide after
  21. reportedly telling his lawyer that he had murdered his wife to
  22. get her life insurance. Last week a grand jury indicted Matthew
  23. and his accomplice McMahon on nine counts ranging from
  24. compounding a felony to unlawfully carrying a firearm. McMahon
  25. was also charged with accessory to murder after the fact -- a
  26. charge from which Matthew, as the killer's brother, is exempt
  27. under Massachusetts law.
